UN: Venezuela 'fighting for its second independence' from US - UN envoy

United States, New York City
August 06, 2019 at 21:58 GMT +00:00 · Published

Venezuelan Ambassador to the United Nations Samuel Moncada accused the United States of implementing a new kind of "brazen colonialism", calling the country racist and white supremacist and saying Venezuela was "fighting for our second independence" during a press conference at the UN headquarters in New York on Tuesday.

The briefing came a day after US President Donald Trump announced that the US would expand its existing sanctions against Venezuela with an executive order banning Americans from doing business with President Nicolas Maduro's government.

"They've abandoned their humanitarian pretences, they've abandoned the pretence that they're fighting for freedom, this is now, clearly, a plan of colonial domination, of direct invasion and direct control by the United States on Venezuela and we're fighting for our second independence as a nation," Moncada said.

"This is the kind of new brazen colonialism in the 21st century, which is fuelled by racism, white supremacism, white nationalism, violence and hate."

He said Venezuela had written a letter to the UN Security Council asking for them "to impede the violation of international law by a permanent member" and asking for a public condemnation by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

On Monday night, in a letter to Congress, Trump said, "I have determined that it is necessary to block the property of the Government of Venezuela in light of the continued usurpation of power by the illegitimate Nicolas Maduro regime, as well as the regime's human rights abuses, arbitrary arrest and detention of Venezuelan citizens."

W/S Venezuelan Ambassador to the UN Samuel Moncada arrives at press conference, New York City

SOT, Samuel Moncada, Venezuelan Ambassador to the UN (Spanish): "The United States is no longer supporting a coup or a war because they support a faction inside Venezuela. No, no, no, now the United States is taking control and forgot about that faction in Venezuela, they're not taking them into account anymore. They're saying, we'll do as I say, I dictate the economic plan, and Venezuela is to be divided up in this way. That's why I say they've abandoned their humanitarian pretences, they've abandoned the pretence that they're fighting for freedom, this is now, clearly, a plan of colonial domination, of direct invasion and direct control by the United States on Venezuela and we're fighting for our second independence as a nation."

SOT, Samuel Moncada, Venezuelan Ambassador to the UN (Spanish): "We've written a letter to the Secretary General, and a letter to the member of the Security Council, denouncing not today's situation, since we've just learned about it last night, but the military threats of naval blockade by the United States government. The Security Council is obligated to take measures to impede the violation of international law by a permanent member, which is forcing the rest of the community to condone, to support, its violations of the law. We've written to the Security Council, asking that they intervene, as per the United Nations charter. We've also written to the Secretary General of the United Nations, asking for a public condemnation of this aggression."

M/S Journalists

SOT, Samuel Moncada, Venezuelan Ambassador to the UN: "We relate, there, more than 55 incidents where the Southern Command, the US Southern Command, sent spy planes into the Venezuelan flight information region without any warning and without any information afterwards. We are not talking about mistakes we are talking about a plan, a systemic execution of a plan trying to get an incident."

M/S Journalists

SOT, Samuel Moncada, Venezuelan Ambassador to the UN: "This is an act of war that the United States is declaring against Venezuela, in front of everyone, for no reason. Venezuela is not a threat to anyone, and the United States is fabricating this aggression just to take the oil."

M/S Journalists

SOT, Samuel Moncada, Venezuelan Ambassador to the UN (Spanish): "They think that by killing the people of Venezuela through hunger, violating their human rights, imposing collective punishments, they can impose themselves through force and arrogance by a government that leads a perpetual war to expand its domination."

M/S Journalists

SOT, Samuel Moncada, Venezuelan Ambassador to the UN: "They are attacking Venezuela with economic measures, economic warfare, and more than economic warfare, economic terrorism, because they are preying on the weak, preying the civilians, preying on the elderly, preying on the women, preying on the children. They are preying on those who cannot defend themselves and taking them as hostages in order to bend our government's will towards their interests."

M/S Journalists

SOT, Samuel Moncada, Venezuelan Ambassador to the UN (Spanish): "The United States is a global kingdom, governing over the world without taking the United Nations into account. They said so here, even, in the Security Council, a US delegate said international laws and decisions by the Security Council were not the reference for the United States for its political decisions because they have their own interests and their own vision of the world. That's what they call American exceptionalism. They say they're such a distinctive nation that they are above international law."

M/S Journalists

SOT, Samuel Moncada, Venezuelan Ambassador to the UN: "They have failed because the people they supported, the local administrations within Venezuela that they imagined and thought would take the streets in masses, and would take over the dictatorship's palaces, as they think in their own sick imagination. It never happened, because they are based in untruths, in absolute baseless propaganda. They believe their own propaganda; they are intoxicated with their own propaganda. As you say here in the US, they drank their own Kool-Aid."
