Belgium: Ecuadorian ex-president Correa says he is being unfairly legally pursued *EXCLUSIVE PARTNER CONTENT*

August 09, 2019 at 23:16 GMT +00:00 · Published

Ecuadorian former president Rafael Correa believes he is the victim of a campaign of 'lawfare' - war by legal means - because his opponents are unable to beat him in a fair election.

"Such war has two sides," explained Correa, during an interview with RT via videolink on Friday.

"The first one is mass media and the show which it puts on" while the other is "a system of justice that is subordinate to the authorities who can only echo newspaper headlines, condemning all leftist leaders."

The ex-president also predicted a victory for his 'Alianza Pais' political party in future elections, potentially opening up a path for his return to Ecuadorian frontline politics despite facing a litany of corruption charges.

In his estimation, legal proceedings against him do not harm his chances at the polls, with current President Lenin Moreno not even capable of becoming the 'president of the parish'.

On Friday, an Ecuadorian court requested the detention of Correa on charges of corruption and bribery involving political financing and Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht.
