France: Hundreds gather to mourn youth who drowned during police raid

France, Nantes
August 10, 2019 at 14:49 GMT +00:00 · Published

Hundreds of Nantes residents and friends of Steve Maia Canico gathered on the banks of the Loire River in Nantes on Saturday, to mourn the youth, who drowned as the police intervened during an open air concert in June.

People in attendance dressed in white, threw flowers in the river near where his body was found on July 29, and stood for a moment of silence before marching along the river bank.

Canico, 24, was one of 14 people who fell in the river during a concert on the night of the Fete de la Musique, where the Anti-Crime Brigade known as the BAC conducted a raid. His body was found 38 days later.

His death and the subsequent finding by an internal police investigation, which “could not establish a link between the police intervention and the disappearance of Mr. Steve Maia Canico,” as French PM Edouard Philippe stated on July 30, caused an outcry in France.

SOT, Thierry, Protester (French): "Police in Nantes has grown accustomed to disproportionate behaviour, reports from the Human Rights League support that assessment. There have been other incidents, including on last Saturday, where there were behaviours and arrests with disproportionate actions. The BAC [Anti-Crime Brigade] which intervened on June 21 is known to have unsuitable behaviours for professional police officers."
