USA: Harris calls on Walmart to halt gun sales at Iowa State Fair

United States, Des Moines
August 10, 2019 at 21:32 GMT +00:00 · Published

Democratic presidential candidate and US Senator for California Kamala Harris has called on Walmart to stop selling guns during a soap-box speech at the Iowa state fair in Des Moines on Saturday.

Her comments come after a mass shooting in an El Paso Walmart which killed 22 people and were part of a wider speech on gun control in the US.

"We need background checks. And we need people to be, as I've said, responsible in the way that they are selling guns. So it's not about everyone needs to stop selling guns, but we absolutely need to have checks and balances on it," Harris said.

The US senator also took aim at sitting US President Donald Trump saying: "Here's a guy who came in office on a slogan that was about Make America Great Again, which of course, for many of us said well, again exactly for whom?"

The Iowa state fair is considered a litmus test for candidates ahead of the Iowa state caucuses in February, the first nominating process in the Democratic Party primaries ahead of the 2020 presidential elections.
