USA: 'March for a United America' comes one week after El Paso shooting

United States, El Paso
August 11, 2019 at 00:32 GMT +00:00 · Published

Protesters assembled for 'March for a United America' on Saturday in El Paso, the site of the deadly mass shooting carried out a week ago by a gunman targeting 'Hispanics'. The march, organised by the League of United Latin Americans (LULAC), was attended by Democratic presidential candidate and local politician Beto O'Rourke.

Protesters were chanting 'Gun reform now' and 'Donald Trump has got to go' as they were marching. Signs reading "We stand united" and "Racism is un-American" could also be seen.

O'Rourke spoke at the gathering and slammed US President Donald Trump for bearing "the brunt of this hatred and this racism."

President of LULAC, Domingo Garcia, called on Texas Governor Greg Abbott to hold a "special session of the Texas legislature" to tackle gun violence.

On August 3, 22 people were killed and more than two dozen injured, after a gunman opened fire at a Walmart store inside the Cielo Vista Mall, the largest shopping centre in El Paso, Texas.
