USA: Sanders calls for ban on assault weapon sales, action on gun safety

United States, Des Moines
August 12, 2019 at 00:42 GMT +00:00 · Published

US Senator and Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders called for the ban on sale and distribution of assault weapons while speaking to supporters and the press at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines on Sunday.

"I believed then and I believe now that we should ban the sale and distribution and I believe that if you own an assault weapon that weapon should be licensed," Sanders said.

The presidential hopeful then went on to say he believed Americans were in fact united on certain issues of gun safety, such as the expansion of background checks.

Sanders also called on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to "call back the United States Senate today, I'll get on a plane and I'll be in D.C. so that we can pass the gun safety legislation passed in the house and do better... we cannot continue to not act and the congress cannot have gun policy written and dictated by the NRA."

The Iowa state fair is considered a litmus test for candidates ahead of the Iowa state caucuses in February, the first nominating process in the Democratic Party primaries ahead of the 2020 presidential elections.
