Hong Kong: Airport protesters find alleged undercover policeman's belongings

Hong Kong, Special Administrative Region of China, Hong Kong
August 14, 2019 at 01:12 GMT +00:00 · Published

Protesters occupying Hong Kong International Airport went through the belongings of an alleged undercover police officer who was detained by protesters earlier on Tuesday.

Footage shows the protesters going through the alleged belongings, which reportedly included a mainland Chinese ID and a T-shirt that read "I love Hong Kong police."

Later, a protester explained his reasons for attending the demonstrations, saying "[The] Hong Kong government left people with no choice but to occupy Hong Kong International airport," adding "people are mostly peaceful and trying to express what they want and trying to get the government to listen but the government is hiding behind police force."

The incident came as protesters disrupted flights at the international hub for a second day on Tuesday.

The Editor-in-chief of a state-owned Chinese newspaper, the Global Times, took to Twitter to say that the man detained by the protesters was in fact an online reporter for the publication.

Protests have been taking place in Hong Kong since the end of March. Demonstrators are calling for the total withdrawal of a suspended bill that would allow the extradition of the city's residents to mainland China for trials. They also want Hong Kong's chief executive Carrie Lam to resign and the conduct of Hong Kong's police during the protests to be investigated.
