Brazil: Amazon locals react to Bolsonaro's rejection of G7 fire aid

Residents of Porto Velho, situated in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, responded to Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro's decision to reject a G7 offer of aid to fight fires in the tropical region this Tuesday.

"We really need this money because we are in a disastrous and urgent situation," argued Maria.

"The situation is serious here in Porto Velho," added Luciano. "He cut some IBAMA [Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources] funds, cut spending, this is hindering the inspections."

The same G7 package which Itamar thought was a "great idea", was rejected as "lacking respect" by fellow Porto Velho resident Wellington.

He said that the fires were typical in the Amazon at this time of year: "I believe that if they wanted to help, it would be otherwise, not wanting to impose on them external ideas, internally."

Bolsonaro has ruled out accepting the $22m (€19.8m) package unless he gets an apology from his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron. He accused the French leader of insulting him personally by calling him a liar. Macron had said the Brazilian president was 'lying' about fighting climate change.

SOT, Itamar, Porto Velho resident (Portuguese): "For sure. He could have accepted that money for, like, it would help the fires a lot, you understand? To get people fighting the fires, you understand? Inspection, not to let the rainforest be destroyed because here, in Brazil, many animals have been burnt to death, very wild animals that have done nothing to deserve being burned. If there was someone to fight these fires, to prevent the fires here in the state of Rondonia, Amazonas in Brazil, anywhere, that would be a great idea. He should have accepted the aid, yes. It would be good to help fighting the fires in Brazil."

SOT, Maria, Porto Velho resident (Portuguese): "I believe Bolsonaro should not have refused this help. I live here in Porto Velho and we really need this money because we are in a disastrous and urgent situation. So all help would be very welcome at this time of great crisis, many fires, and Bolsonaro should have accepted this money."

SOT, Luciano, Porto Velho resident (Portuguese): "He could have accepted this help because the situation here is not easy. We are from the north, we have observed that the fires have increased more and more every day. I have two children and I know what I am saying when I say that the situation is serious here in Porto Velho. As I learned, I do not know if this source is true, that he cut some IBAMA [Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources] funds, cut spending, this is hindering the inspections."

SOT, Wellington, Porto Velho resident (Portuguese): "I believe that he should not have accepted the aid, because I found both powers were lacking respect as they want to take into account what we do. I think it is not that way because we, who are here in the Amazon, we know that these fires typically happen. If you go through the length of the roads, you will see some, many fires that are typical of the region that they can actually do this, it is their custom and I believe that if they wanted to help, it would be otherwise, not wanting to impose on them external ideas, internally."
