Germany: Berlin to provide help 'as quickly as possible' to fight Amazon fires

Germany, Berlin
August 28, 2019 at 17:45 GMT +00:00 · Published

Germany wants to "contribute effective assistance as quickly as possible" to help deal with the fires raging in the Amazon, government spokesperson Steffen Seibert said in Berlin on Wednesday. He made the comments at a press conference at which issues relating to Ukraine were also discussed.

"We want to give all possible contributions that we have, and that will be coordinated by Brussels," he stated.

Seibert also hailed what he described as "progress" towards establishing peace in east Ukraine's Stanytsia Luhanska, saying that the situation there has improved for local residents in recent weeks.

The government spokesperson also noted that while a concrete date had not yet been set for a meeting of the Normandy Four on Ukraine, such a gathering was indeed planned and "should also be as well prepared as possible."

German Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Adebahr meanwhile said Berlin would continue to monitor the trial of RIA Novosti Ukraine editor-in-chief Kirill Vyshynsky, after he was released on bail in Ukraine. She went on to affirm that "Germany commits itself worldwide to the freedom of the press in all countries."

SOT, Maria Adebahr, German Foreign Ministry spokesperson (German): "We have observed the trial against Kirill Vyschinsky very closely from the beginning, the trial in Ukraine. We ourselves don't have our own information concerning the accusations against him. But we have supported, and that's still the case, the OSCE, which has also always insisted on an acceleration of the proceedings from the Ukrainian side. And that fact that Mr Vyschinsky has been set free [on bail], is maybe a step, or at least we hope so, in this direction. Germany commits itself worldwide to the freedom of the press in all countries, in Ukraine, and that also goes for Russia of course. They know [this], and also from this point of view, we will of course continue to keep an eye on proceedings against Vyschinsky."

SOT, Steffen Seibert, government spokesperson: "The progress achieved in Stanytsia Luhanska, which had also been discussed fruitlessly and for a long time, and has actually ... in the sense of the people who live there, has got better in the last few weeks shortly after the new Ukrainian president took office. I think he has referred to this in the hope that circumstances occur, again, in the sense of peace and in the sense that those who live in east Ukraine will continue to see progress."

SOT, Steffen Seibert, government spokesperson (German): "I cannot name a concrete date, but both the German chancellor and the french president have expressed themselves about this [possible Normandy Four meeting], and now preparations should be carried out as well as possible, so that the Normandy Four meeting on the level of state and government leaders can be held."

SOT, Steffen Seibert, government spokesperson (German): "What can the G7 do, and we belong to that too, about how to stop the terrible cost of the burning in the Amazon. That was a big theme at the G7 meeting in Biarritz. And there was also a focus in the G7 meeting on what could be done right now in order to provide practical help, concerning all the affected countries. Brazil is one of those, and of course it is one of the countries with an especially large amount of the Amazon rainforest in its territory. Bolivia, Paraguay and French Guiana, which is of course essentially a French matter; all of these countries get in contact, in order to determine what is needed here; how can one in the best way help them concretely, with experts, with technical help, or also just financially."

SOT, Steffen Seibert, government spokesperson (German): "Firstly, our position is now to contribute effective assistance as quickly as possible so that the fires in the affected countries can be dealt with. Therefore we want to give all possible contributions that we have, and that will be coordinated by Brussels. Secondly, our line is that climate, environment and sustainability clauses are just as important in the EU-Mercosur agreement as other clauses. They are particularly important, and have been inserted into the agreement for this reason. And that means it remains to be seen, whether or not they will be upheld."
