General Director of the European Space Agency (ESA) Johann-Dietrich Woerner said that the agency will continue cooperation with Roscosmos, speaking at the MASK 2019 international air show in Zhukovsky on Wednesday.

"As the Americans will have in the future their own capability again, most probably they will offer us seats in the new American launchers, which does not mean that automatically we will not fly with Soyuz," said the director.

"We might have some discussions with the Russian side for a similar agreement as we have with the Americans," the ESA director added.

Woerner stated ESA and Roscosmos have a lot of joint projects together, including the ExoMars mission.

He added that Russian cosmonauts will continue cooperation with the Europeans as "they are working together" at the International Space Station which means that "they should be trained also together."

SOT, Johann-Dietrich Woerner, General Director of the European Space Agency: "So far we have an agreement with NASA, with the Americans for astronaut flights. So, we are not paying money but we are delivering hardware to the Americans or to the International Space Station and by that the Americans offer our seats in a spacecraft, in a launcher, in a space shuttle or in a Soyuz. So, now as the Americans will have in the future their own capability again, most probably they will offer us seats in the new American launchers, which does not mean that automatically we will not fly with Soyuz. So there we might have some discussions with the Russian side for a similar agreement as we have with the Americans."

SOT, Johann-Dietrich Woerner, General Director of the European Space Agency: "So, we have more than just astronauts flights or cosmonaut flights together with Russia. We have a lot of scientific missions. And I am quite sure that we'll have also in the future cooperation for the astronauts and cosmonauts because in the International Space Station they are working together, so they should be trained also together partly. So, I don't see any big impact from that."

SOT, Johann-Dietrich Woerner, General Director of the European Space Agency: "So, we have ExoMars, ExoMars first part, ExoMars 2016 is at Mars. It is working perfectly, we will have the 2020 mission next year hopefully, so going to Mars and looking for life on the surface. It's the same time we are flying to Mercury together with BepiColombo, where we have Russian pilot on board, and we are looking to at the Moon, so Moon, Mars, Mercury and ISS, so we have a lot of cooperation."

SOT, Johann-Dietrich Woerner, General Director of the European Space Agency: "In our convention, the ESA convention, it says that ESA is working for exclusively peaceful purposes. So for us it's very simple, we are looking to peaceful applications, we are also looking for security and safety, especially for reducing space debris and solar flare is an issue and meteorites, but it is always peaceful for ESA."
