Thousands rallied in Hong Kong's Charter Garden on Wednesday to demand the city's police answer accusations of sexual violence against protesters.

The alleged instances occurred during the extradition bill protests and comes amid widespread civil disobedience in the special administrative region.

At least 11,000 demonstrators turned out, according to police estimates. Many wore purple and shone purple lights to show support for the victims.

Chairperson of the Association for the Advancement of Feminism Mabel Au claimed the police were using sexual violence to scare Hong Kongers into not participating in the protests.

The demonstration was inspired by the #MeToo movement, which seeks to give a voice to victims of sexual harassment.

SOT, protest organiser (Cantonese): "Regarding the situation of police and law enforcement officers treating the public with sexual violence, besides the cases we have just heard, I'm now going to share with you another case, the victim said in our questionnaire: she was rubbed by the police officer with a hard object to her private part, and was forced to eat some diuretic drugs, she was prevented from going to the toilet when she requested to pee. At last, she was incontinent and the whole skirt was soiled."

SOT, Mabel Au, Chairperson of the Association for the Advancement of Feminism: "We want to condemn, the police do not follow the law and rules to do the policing and then to do their work. So it is especially for us, we are a women's group that are very concerned on the sexual violence in the society. Though in the past we tried to combat these kinds of violence, but then, in the past we do have collaborations with the police but then now, the police themselves carry all these kinds of sexual violence against the protesters and then the main aim is to try to scare them to not participate in the demonstrations and this is very outrageous."
