China: USA beat Czechs to open defence of Basketball World Cup

The US men's basketball team beat the Czech Republic 88-67 in their opening game of the 2019 FIBA World Cup in Shanghai on Sunday.

"It was a very competitive game, physical, [with] opportunity to learn a lot," USA coach Gregg Popovich said at a press conference following the game. "This is a little bit different, obviously, from the NBA. A lot of great teams and just an opportunity to get better," Popovich added.

"They executed really well," USA player Donovan Mitchell said about the Czech team. "That's what we kind of expected coming into this tournament, teams to be really connected and, you know, their chemistry to be on a high level.

"We did a lot of good things, we guarded it well, we've got a lot of things we can definitely work on," Mitchell added.

Mitchell sunk 16 points, with Kemba Walker and Harrison Barnes each hitting 14, and Jayson Tatum adding 10 of his own.

The victory marks the Americans' 54th consecutive win in major tournaments as they seek to win the World Cup for a third straight time.
