China: USA beat Czechs to open defence of Basketball World Cup

The US men's basketball team beat the Czech Republic 88-67 in their opening game of the 2019 FIBA World Cup in Shanghai on Sunday.

"It was a very competitive game, physical, [with] opportunity to learn a lot," USA coach Gregg Popovich said at a press conference following the game. "This is a little bit different, obviously, from the NBA. A lot of great teams and just an opportunity to get better," Popovich added.

"They executed really well," USA player Donovan Mitchell said about the Czech team. "That's what we kind of expected coming into this tournament, teams to be really connected and, you know, their chemistry to be on a high level.

"We did a lot of good things, we guarded it well, we've got a lot of things we can definitely work on," Mitchell added.

Mitchell sunk 16 points, with Kemba Walker and Harrison Barnes each hitting 14, and Jayson Tatum adding 10 of his own.

The victory marks the Americans' 54th consecutive win in major tournaments as they seek to win the World Cup for a third straight time.

SOT, Donovan Mitchell, USA national basketball team player: "I've got to give credit to them for starters, they are very competitive. They executed really well. And that's what we kind of expected coming into this tournament, teams to be really connected and, you know, their chemistry to be on a high level. But you know, we did a lot of good things, we guarded it well, we've got a lot of things we can definitely work on. But I think it's definitely a good start to the tournament."

SOT, Gregg Popovich, Head Coach of USA national basketball team: "It was a very competitive game, physical, [with] opportunity to learn a lot. About this game, this is a little bit different, obviously, from the NBA. A lot of great teams and just an opportunity to get better. That's what we look at in each of these games, to try to be the best team we can be. And we've got ways to go, but we're willing."

SOT, Donovan Mitchell, USA national basketball team player: "The fact that we are so close, that we've become so close so fast, I think it's allowing us to be able to communicate with each other about just staying locked in. Whether they hit a shot at the end of the shot clock, being able to come in together and just keep it simple and stay together, I think that is one thing that is a little bit different than obviously playing in international basketball. Obviously our fans are thousands of miles away so it's obviously kind of always kind of an away game but being able to stay locked in with us as a unit, I think that's one thing we are really adjusting to and I think we're doing a good job with that."
