UK: Journalist Pilger slams London's 'dictatorship' over treatment of Assange

United Kingdom, London
September 03, 2019 at 09:07 GMT +00:00 · Published

Australian journalist John Pilger heavily criticized the UK government’s treatment of Wikileaks co-founder Julian Assange during a rally held in London on Monday outside the UK Home Office in support of Assange.

"The behaviour of the British government towards Julian Assange is a disgrace. A profanity on the very notion of human rights. It’s no exaggeration to say that the treatment and persecution of Julian Assange is the way that dictatorships treat a political prisoner," Pilger said.

The Australian journalist went on to warn that all those who expose "the lies and crimes of our governments" are in danger of suffering the same fate as the Wikileaks co-founder.

"By defending Julian Assange we defend our most sacred rights. Speak up now or wake up one morning to the silence of a new kind of tyranny, the choice is ours," Pilger also said at the rally.

Pink Floyd musician Roger Waters also attended the rally where he performed a rendition of his famous song 'Wish You Were Here.'

Assange, who is currently serving a 50-week jail sentence for breaching his bail conditions, will face a US extradition hearing in February on charges of espionage.

SOT, John Pilger, Australian journalist: "When I asked Julian what he'd like me to say today, he was adamant: 'Say It's not just me, it’s much wider. It’s all of us. It’s all journalists, and all publishers who do their job, who are in danger."

SOT, John Pilger, Australian journalist: "The danger Julian Assange faces can easily spread to the present and past editors of the Guardian, the New York Times, Der Spiegel, El Pais in Spain, the Sydney Morning Herald, and many other newspapers and media outlets around the world that published the WikiLeaks revelations about the lies and crimes of our governments."
