UK: England manager Gareth Southgate says team 'hungry' ahead of international season

United Kingdom, London
September 06, 2019 at 21:48 GMT +00:00 · Published

England manager Gareth Southgate held a press conference alongside striker Marcus Rashford at London’s Wembley Stadium on Friday.

"I think we're competitive against any team, but equally I think there are a number of teams, who on their day, as proved in the summer, are capable of beating us. So, we have to keep striving to improve and I think the mentality of the team is to do that; they're hungry to do that, they want to keep learning. We want to keep pushing each other every day in training and if we do that we can take those performances into the field. So, for us I'm looking forward to the new international season," Southgate said.

The players trained at St. George’s Park in Burton earlier in the day with the likes of Tottenham’s Harry Kane, Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling and Borussia Dortmund attacker Jadon Sancho all being put through their paces.

England sit at the top of Group A having smashed the Czech Republic 5-0 and Montenegro 5-1 in their two games so far, while Bulgaria, having played four games, lie in fifth with just two points.

SOT, Gareth Southgate, England team Manager: "Well, I think we've everything to prove in terms of where we're pitched in world rankings. I think we're competitive against any team, but equally I think there are a number of teams, who on their day, as proved in the summer, are capable of beating us. So, we have to keep striving to improve and I think the mentality of the team is to do that; they're hungry to do that, they want to keep learning. We want to keep pushing each other everyday in training and if we do that we can take those performances into the field. So, for us I'm looking forward to the new international season if you like."

SOT, Gareth Southgate, England team Manager : "It's great to see him [Marcus Rashford] have additional responsibility at United, but from our perspective, he's one of a number of exciting attacking players that we have, and that competition for places is a great thing for us because whoever starts we need to be able to accelerate the game from the bench and have those options from the bench as well, and we have got the players to do that and as a coach it's an enjoyable problem to have."

SOT, Gareth Southgate, England team Manager : "We've got to take care of qualification everyday we have to work to be the best we can be and over the last couple of years I think we've started to put together an exciting team that now sells out Wembley very quickly. Hopefully we're playing in a style that the supporters look forward to, and we have real competition for places and we got to make sure we have a mindset that every day we train, every session that we're in, we're operating at the highest possible level and that we push ourselves, and if we do that our performances will be right on the field"

SOT, Marcus Rashford, England team Striker: "Obviously, social media is a big problem because of that, for me it's too easy to do whatever you like on the internet and any of us now could go on and create accounts and write what we want under anyone's posts and no one would ever know, but I think it's easy to sort of figure it out. If you have to show identification to create an account that means everyone can only have one account rather than there being, like I know for me, there's hundreds of thousands of people who use my name on Social Media and they can, you know, write what they like so.."
