'Forest' in football stadium envisions future without natural woodlands

'For Forest' is an art installation consisting of nearly 300 trees inside Worthersee stadium in the Austrian city of Klagenfurt that opened its doors on Saturday, calling on people to reflect upon their relationship with nature.

The project, which was inspired by a drawing of Austrian painter Max Peintner, created by Klaus Littmann and executed by landscape architect Enzo Enea, showcases 50-year-old trees and aims to make the spectator consider that forests and trees could soon only be seen in museums due to ongoing environmental damage.

"The project is of course successful if a lot of people visit it," said Littmann.

"But the real success for me is to have the knowledge that - and I had it quite strongly in the last 48 hours - this view is propagated around the world and remain adhered in people's heads" he added.

'For Forest' is open to visitors from 8th September to 27th October, before having all of its trees planted in nearby properties.

Though Peinter's drawing was made over 30 years ago, the current exhibition comes at a time when fears of deforestation have peaked in the wake of the wildfires raging across the Amazon rainforest.
