Bahamas: Hurricane evacuees reach Florida port on cruise ship

Bahamas, Freeport
September 09, 2019 at 10:09 GMT +00:00 · Published

Hundreds of Bahamian evacuees boarded a Florida-bound cruise ship in Freeport on Sunday, fleeing the devastation left by Hurricane Dorian.

The Grand Celebration Humanitarian Cruise ship offered free transportation to West Palm Beach to a number of Bahamians, while also providing food and supplies to the island.

Passenger John McKenzie recounted how he lost one cousin and his wife to the hurricane, described as a "tsunami that came to the Bahamas."

"Many people right now have nowhere to live. They live on the street. So no food, no water, no power, nothing," passenger Roeniel Tibe said.

Footage shows a meeting of two organisers of the humanitarian mission, Resolve Marine Group and Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line.

At least 43 people were killed after Dorian hit the Bahamas, a figure local officials expect to rise significantly as more bodies and missing people are discovered. Dorian has in the meantime moved its way up the east coast of North America, striking the eastern Canadian province of Nova Scotia on Saturday, though it was since downgraded to a post-tropical storm since it lost a clearly defined eye.
