Germany: Newly-elected town council leader from NPD defies calls for removal

Germany, Waldsiedlung
September 10, 2019 at 20:55 GMT +00:00 · Published

National Democratic Party of Germany (NPD) politician Stefan Jagsch who was elected the leader of the town council of Waldsiedlung, near Frankfurt am Main, commented on the calls for his removal, in Waldsiedlung, Tuesday.

He said that the "national pressure" after his election has "nothing to do with true democracy" and that politicians calling for the election to be revoked are "acting against the constitution."

"For me it is important to make politics that is close to citizens. If a resident has a problem I want to help and carry the issue to the local council or the administration directly," he stressed.

Jagsch was unanimously voted to lead the town council because no one else wanted the position after his FDP predecessor resigned.

SOT, Stefan Jagsch, Town Council Leader of Waldsiedlung (German): "Due to the national pressure which was caused by established politicians who cannot accept democratic elections, this pressure (demands to revoke the election) has been put on the table. And that's a point to criticise and I don't think it is okay. This has nothing to do with true democracy. And in my opinion these parties are acting against the constitution."

SOT, Stefan Jagsch, Town Council Leader of Waldsiedlung (German): "I have always managed to separate politics and private issues from my workplace and that's why I can clearly separate these things [NPD membership] from one another, the interests of the residents here and regional and national politics."

M/S Jagsch

SOT, Stefan Jagsch, Town Council Leader of Waldsiedlung (German): "It is common for our local council that it was never about party politics. Especially the topics here: damaged roads, dog toilets, or we organise collective rubbish collection, and that's really far from regional or national politics."

SOT, Stefan Jagsch, Town Council Leader of Waldsiedlung (German): "The interests that are being represented here in the local council, migration policies are not a topic. It does not even belong here."

Journalist (German): "And if it becomes a topic?"

Stefan Jagsch, Town Council Leader of Waldsiedlung (German): "Then it will be negotiated objectively."

Journalist: "What's your position on the migrant policies of the Federal Government?"

Stefan Jagsch, Town Council Leader of Waldsiedlung (German): "I don't want to comment on regional or federal politics at the moment, as I separate that strictly at the moment. Because the inquiries now are about the mayor elections and local council leader elections."
