India: Lockdown for Ashura commemorations in Kashmir

India, Srinagar and Magam
September 10, 2019 at 22:29 GMT +00:00 · Published

Indian security forces imposed tight controls on the Shia holy day of Ashura in the Kashmiri city of Srinagar on Tuesday.

Empty streets, road blocks and barbed wire could be seen throughout the Jammu and Kashmir's summer capital, with the government looking to maintain law and order

The Shia community in the town of Magam were allowed to carry out a procession.

Ashura commemorates the martyrdom in battle of the Imam Hussein, a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, in 680AD. It falls on the 10th of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Ashura is marked with mourning rituals and passion plays re-enacting Hussein's martyrdom. This year's event was used to condemn India's treatment of Kashmir.

Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir has been on lockdown since the beginning of August when India stripped the region of its autonomous status. A curfew, restrictions on travel, communications and movement were all imposed. The move sparked outrage in Pakistan, which responded by cutting off diplomatic and economic ties with India.
