Fashion designer and activist Vivienne Westwood said she was "thrilled to bits" to see Wikileaks founder Julian Assange at HMP Belmarsh in south London on Tuesday.

During the impromptu press conference, Westwood said that Assange was being held in solitary confinement.

She also likened Assange to a "freedom fighter" facing a potential sentence of 175 years in jail "for telling the truth".

SOT, Vivienne Westwood, fashion designer and activist: "I was thrilled to bits to see him. He has lost weight, and it took me a month to get, to manage to see him. During that time he's been in solitary confinement, he's now gone back to solitary confinement, an innocent man in fact, and according to the law a man is innocent until he is proven guilty and there he is in solitary confinement. And he's been persecuted for nine years for telling the truth. And so the state he's in, it's a wonder I expect. I don't know how I'd cope."

SOT, Vivienne Westwood, fashion designer and activist: "He must not be extradited. During those nine years he's been trapped, mostly by the English, held in wait for these things which America wants to get him for and what the want to get him for is telling the truth and he's a freedom fighter. Democracy is in crisis at the moment."

SOT, Vivienne Westwood, Fashion designer and activist: "This man, believe it or not, faces 175 years in jail. That's totally out of proportion, it's the kind of thing a nation who's gone crazy is charging somebody with, for telling the truth. How crazy is all that? You know, and he's responsible for it and he's not gone mad. I think it's outrageous, outrageous and it's heartbreaking also. And the human race, he's a freedom fighter. And the reason he's such an innocent and good man is because he is a freedom fighter. Why do you think people like that speak up for the truth? Because they care about people, that's why. They care about the face that people try to get away with shooting innocent people."
