UK: Scotland's highest court rules Johnson's Parliament prorogation as 'unlawful'

United Kingdom's parliament may be called back after Scotland's highest court ruled UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson's suspension of parliament as 'illegal', in Edinburgh on Wednesday.

With today’s decision, a judicial panel chaired by Lord Doherty overturned a previous ruling, made on September 4, which found no violation of the rule of law in Johnson's decision and deemed it a political matter for politicians to settle.

"Now for every moment Parliament remains prorogued, the British government are breaking the law. So, we as politicians are calling for Parliament to be recalled so that we can get on with scrutinising what this government is up to in relation to Brexit," said Joanna Cherry, Scottish National Party (SNP) Member of Parliament.

Tommy Sheppard, SNP MP, added that the next move is to demand the recall of Parliament.

"We need to get back representing the people who elected us. The people who put there at this time of political crisis," he said.

The UK government is set to appeal at the UK Supreme Court against the latest ruling, reports say.

SOT, Joanna Cherry, SNP MP: "This is a unanimous decision; a unanimous decision by Scotland's highest court that the prorogation of Parliament by Boris Johnson was unlawful. And as Tommy Sheppard, one of my co-petitioners has pointed out, now for every moment Parliament remains prorogued, the British government are breaking the law. So, we as politicians are calling for Parliament to be recalled so that we can get on with scrutinising what this government is up to in relation to Brexit."
