Germany: 'Great disappointment' - Chinese ambassador on FM's meeting with HK protest leader

Germany, Berlin
September 11, 2019 at 16:45 GMT +00:00 · Published

Chinese ambassador to Germany Wu Ken protested against a meeting between German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas and one of the leaders of the Hong Kong protests Joshua Wong. Wu was speaking at a news conference in China's embassy in Berlin on Wednesday.

"After Federal Foreign Minister Heiko Maas met Joshua Wong, we held two important talks both in Beijing and Berlin between the two ambassadors and the responsible Foreign Ministry officials. However, with regard to the content of what the respective ambassadors discussed, this falls under the category of diplomatic practice and unfortunately I cannot comment here. What I can say, though, is that there is great disappointment on the Chinese side. And we are resolutely protesting against the fact that such an incident has occurred. This incident will have a very negative impact on the bilateral relationship," said the ambassador.

Wu also confirmed that Beijing summoned the German ambassador over the meeting.
