Spain: Demolition of former Atletico Madrid stadium prompts complaints from locals

The dust and noise pollution caused by the ongoing demolition of the Vicente Calderon stadium in Madrid, the former home of Atletico Madrid football club, has prompted complaints by some local residents and schools nearby. Some of the pupils' parents voiced out their concerns, speaking on camera in the vicinity of the site on Friday.

The two primary schools — CEIP Tomas Breton and CEIP Joaquin Costa — and one high school — IES Gran Capitan — are located just a few hundred metres from the stadium demolition site.

"They are measuring noise levels and particles in the air. What we demand from the city council, now the families are finally calm, that these measurements are shown on the internet so the families can verify that there is transparency, so the families are informed about the measurements," said Luis Benedicto, a father of a CEIP Tomas Breton student.

Sara Sanchidrian, the mother of another CEIP Tomas Breton student, said, "[There is] so much uncertainty and sadness, because it is a shame that they do not comply with what we agreed, or at least with what we demanded, we never got a firm resolution."

After protesting against the Madrid City Council since the start of the school year, on Thursday officials assured the schools and locals that noise and dust pollution levels will be published online soon to assuage their fears of contamination.

Atletico Madrid sold the Vicente Calderon stadium for €182 million ($200 million). The demolitions and constructions works are set to continue until 2022 when new housing and recreational developments will be built on the site.
