Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador led the Mexican Independence celebrations in Mexico City on Sunday.

Over a hundred thousand people gathered on Zocalo square to listen to Obrador's speech commemorating the beginning of the War of Independence against Spain.

Lopez Obrador addressed the audience from the balcony of the National Palace, decorated with the colours of the Mexican flag for the occasion, praising the heroes of the history of Mexico.

“Long live to the indigenous communities! Long live to freedom! Long live to justice! Long live to democracy! Long live to our sovereignty! Long live to the universal fraternity! Long live to peace!”

This marked Obrador's first 'Grito de Dolores' [literally Cry of Dolores] to celebrate the 209 anniversary of the independence of Spain since he assumed office.

The Cry of Dolores is considered the event that began the Mexican War of Independence in the early morning of 16 September 1810, when Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang the bell of his church calling people to arms against Spain.
