Turkey: Russian missile defence systems ‘would protect’ Saudi Arabia from drone attacks – Putin

Turkey, Ankara

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow is ready to help Riyadh if needed following attacks on the Saudi oil industry, speaking in Ankara at a joint press conference with his Turkish and Iranian counterparts.

"For the political leadership of Saudi Arabia it would be enough to make a wise decision, as the leaders of Iran did by purchasing the S-300, and as President Erdogan did by purchasing from Russia the latest S-400 Triumph air defence systems. They would reliably protect any infrastructure of Saudi Arabia", said Putin.

His Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani also commented on the recent drone attacks against Saudi oil industry.

"The people of Yemen were forced to retaliate following this daily flow of arms to Saudi Arabia that is used against the Yemeni people. What Yemeni people are doing is protecting themselves, protecting themselves from the attacks," Rouhani stated.

The Iranian leader went on saying that "fundamental solution to this problem is diplomacy. Maybe what we are witnessing within the Astana format will be the model."

Discussing the Syrian settlement, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan offered to build a refugee city alongside the Syria-Turkey border."

"In this region we can build a refugee city, we can build a few accommodations for the refugees where they can grow some fruits and vegetables. We can start the preparations in this regard," he said.

The Ankara summit between the three world leaders was the fifth meeting under the Astana Format.
