Venezuela: Government signs agreement with moderate opposition group

The Venezuelan Government reached an agreement with a minority group of the Venezuelan opposition that does not have the support of the president of the Venezuelan National Assembly, Juan Guaido, at a meeting at the headquarters of the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry on Monday.

An agreement was reached on the unanimous rejection of the sanctions against Venezuela, and the demand for their immediate lifting. In relation to this, the signing parties support the exchange of oil for food, medicine and inputs according to UN mechanisms.

Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, Minister of Communication and Information Jorge Rodriguez and Chancellor Jorge Arreaza were the envoys of the Venezuelan government, and the opposition was represented by leaders of the parties Movimiento Socialismo (MAS), Avanzada Progresista (AP), Soluciones and Cambiemos, and others.

The agreement also includes the formation of the National Electoral Council (CNE) and the possibility of ending the deprivation of liberty in cases where the legal system permits.

The Minister of Communication, Jorge Rodriguez, stated that the Government maintained all the disposition to maintain negotiations: "We have not closed, nor will we close, any door, any initiative to resolve among Venezuelans the issues that only concern us Venezuelans. This is a discussion table for an agreement between Venezuelans."

The signing of the pact comes hours after Guaido announced the end of the dialogue with the government that had the mediation of Norway, alleging that the government refused to continue negotiating.
