Israel: Netanyahu's main opponent Gantz casts his vote in general election

Israel, Rosh Haayin

Israeli Kahol Lavan alliance leader Benny Gantz and his wife Revital cast their ballots in the general election in Rosh Haayin on Tuesday.

"This is a very important day. This is what a democratic country is all about. Everybody go and put his vote and let's hope for change, let's hope for new hope," said Gantz, who is considered current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's main opponent.

"What is driving me in these elections is keeping sanity in Israel and I am very worried about the democracy in my country. I hope it will work for us and for every one of us," said one of the people who had come to vote.

Gantz, who failed to unseat Netanyahu during the April vote, may have another chance thanks to the snap elections held on Tuesday, as Netanyahu was unable to form a governing coalition after the elections in April.

Netanyahu has pledged to annex the Jordan Valley and the northern Dead Sea in case he wins the election. This move drew sharp criticism amongst the Arabic community since the area constitutes more than 30 percent of the West Bank and has approximately 65,000 Palestinians and 11,000 Israeli settlers as its inhabitants.
