Israel: 'Kingmaker' Lieberman calls for unity government

Israel, Jerusalem
September 18, 2019 at 00:26 GMT +00:00 · Published

Israel's former defence minister Avigdor Lieberman called for a "unity government" in the wake of what appears to be a tight electoral race.

At a rally in Jerusalem on Tuesday night, Lieberman reiterated calls for unity he made during the campaign.

"We only have one option," he told supporters. "A broad, liberal, national government made up of Yisrael Beiteinu, Likud and Blue and White."

Exit polls suggest the race is too close to call. The Blue and White alliance led by former general Benny Gantz is projected to win between 32 and 34 seats in the 120-seat Knesset, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party 31 to 33.

Lieberman's party may hold sway in a new government.

Coalition negotiations are expected to start soon with results coming on Wednesday morning.
