UK: AG Cox dubs parliament 'disgrace' after MPs return following court ruling

United Kingdom, London
September 25, 2019 at 14:03 GMT +00:00 · Published

UK Attorney General Geoffrey Cox dubbed parliament a "disgrace", as the House of Commons reconvened in London on Wednesday, following a period of suspension.

"This parliament is a dead parliament. It should no longer sit. It has no moral right to sit on these green benches," said Cox.

He then accused Members of Parliament of being "too cowardly," adding that "this Parliament should have the courage to face the electorate. But it won't, because so many of them are really all about preventing us leaving the European Union at all. But the time is coming, the time is coming Mr Speaker, when even these turkeys won't be able to prevent Christmas."

The Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow announced that the reference to Parliament's prorogation will be expunged and "instead recorded as adjourned" in the journal of the House.

The UK's Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that the decision by Prime Minister Boris Johnson to suspend parliament in the run-up to Brexit was "unlawful", saying it was "void and of no effect."

Johnson was forced to curtail his trip to the United Nations in New York City and return home in order to face parliament, landing back in the UK early on Wednesday.
