Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi warned that the pursuit of unilateralism and protectionism risks causing a global recession during his speech at the 74th United Nations General Assembly in New York City on Friday.

"The lessons of the great depression should not be forgotten, threats and provocation of trade disputes which upset global industrial and supply chains serve to undermine the multilateral trading regime and global and economic and trade order, they may even plunge the world into recession," the Foreign Minister said.

Wang Yi went on to state that both unilateralism and protectionism pose "major threats to the international order."

"Let me make it very clear, China is a country with a 5,000-year civilization, 1.4 billion courageous and hardworking people and a vast land of nine point six million square kilometres. China will not ever be cowered by threats or subdued by pressure," he added.

The Chinese foreign minister also announced that Beijing has begun national legislative proceedings to join the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT).

The UN General Assembly High-level General Debate started September 24, with 91 heads of state and top diplomats from 193 nations coming together under the theme 'Galvanising multilateral efforts for poverty eradication, quality education, climate action and inclusion.'
