Austria: FPO's Hofer promises rebound after election setback

Austria, Vienna

Freedom Party of Austria (FPO) candidate Norbert Hofer promised his supporters in Vienna, on Sunday, that he will "do anything" to help the party recover from their legislative election defeat.

The FPO came third, according to preliminary results, with a 10 per cent loss in vote share from previous elections.

"We will do anything, Herbert and I, and together with you, to transform this FPO to the party that returns to the very front in Austria, because Austria needs this FPO," said Hofer.

The FPO leader also expressed doubt that a winning coalition, led by Austrian People Party's Sebastian Kurz and comprised of parties from all sides of the political spectrum, would be able to fulfil election campaign promises.

"The election promises that Sebastian Kurz has made, will be a challenged to implement [in a potential coalition] with the Green Party or with the SPO," said Hofer.

According to the results, Kurz's OVP won 38.4 per cent of the vote. The Social Democratic Party of Austria came in second, with 21.5 per cent, while The Greens picked up 12.4 per cent.

Kurz's government collapsed in May, triggering snap elections when a recording was published of then-Vice Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache in a conversation with an unidentified woman claiming to be the niece of a Russian oligarch, discussing taking control of the country's largest-circulation tabloid in order to help the FPO in future elections. The purported deal was allegedly made in exchange for public contracts.
