UN: North Korean envoy blames US for 'vicious cycle of tension' in General Assembly speech

North Korea's envoy to the UN blamed the US for what he called 'a vicious cycle of increased tension' on the Korean Peninsula. Kim Song was addressing the General Assembly in New York City on Monday.

''More than one year has passed since the adoption of the June 12 DPRK-US joint statement. However, the relations between the DPRK and the US have made little progress so far and the situation on the Korean peninsula has not come out of the vicious cycle of increased tension, which is entirely attributable to the political and military provocations perpetrated by the US," said the diplomat.

Kim described the UN Security Council as being 'reduced to an instrument of the strategic interests of a specific country, in total disregard of international justice.''

The speech came on the last day of the United Nations General Assembly, which saw leaders from the UN member discuss global issues during the past week.
