Germany: Assange's father says son is victim of continued ‘arbitrary detention'

Julian Assange's father John Shipton said the United Nations recognised that his son is being "arbitrarily detained" and that he "suffered all of the physical and mental deprivations of torture and ought to be released forthwith" at a weekly #Candles4Assange vigil in Berlin on Wednesday.

"He has lost 15 kilos of weight and he is currently in the hospital, the prison hospital. Psychologically he suffers some anxiety because there is no end in sight. There is, it has already been nine years, arbitrary detention, and the extradition process looks like taking three to five years," Shipton said of the toll solitary confinement in UK maximum-security Belmarsh prison is taking on Julian Assange’s wellbeing.

What the Ecuadorian government did with its spy services, spying on Julian day and night, they even, and bugging the lady’s toilet, is a disgrace and a scandal,” he continued, condemning the State’s behaviour in whose London embassy he was granted Asylum in for the past seven years, adding a US court "ruled firmly that Ecuador and the Moreno government have broken the law in regard to Julian.”

Assange’s father's hope is that the German government can influence the United Kingdom by reminding it of the conventions on asylum it signed as an EU member state and that they "free Julian straight away."

Assange was arrested and removed from the Ecuadorian embassy on April 11, ending his seven-year long stay in the building and his asylum status. Politicians condemned the conduct of Ecuador's government and the United States, warning of the dangerous precedent it sets for journalism based on whistleblowing and uncomfortable truths.
