Germany: EU wishes for orderly Brexit but prepared for no-deal - Merkel

Germany, Berlin

German Chancellor Angela Merkel stated that Germany was hoping for an "orderly exit" of the UK from the EU, however they were prepared for a no-deal Brexit scenario, during a joint press conference alongside Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte in Berlin on Wednesday,

"We know that detailed proposals will be presented today, that is happening about now or in any case today in Brussels. We will look at the proposals closely. I cannot say anything about it yet today we agreed that we will evaluate them together. It is important for us that we stick together as 27. We trust Michel Barnier and we will discuss this further," the German Chancellor said.

"We still wish for a solution with a deal, an orderly exit of Britain. But both nations have prepared for a scenario in which that is not the case. We are also prepared for that," Merkel added.

During the German-Dutch Government Consultation Rutte and Merkel also talked about a cooperation of the two nations in stopping climate change and developing alternative energy.
