UK: Johnson says new Brexit 'compromise' plan shows 'great flexibility'

The UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson addressed Members of Parliament on Thursday regarding a new Brexit plan that shows "compromise" and "great flexibility", at the House of Commons in London.

Johnson highlighted that the essence of the new proposal, that sees the Irish backstop fully removed and is essentially a protocol that consists of five elements that seek to sustain the Belfast Good Friday Agreement, including the creation of a new regulatory zone without the need for any checks or infrastructures at or near the border.

“Indeed, I have already given a guarantee that the UK government will never conduct checks at the border and we believe the EU should do the same,” Johnson said.

Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn called out Johnson on his "rehashed version of previously rejected proposals", stating that the plan put the Good Friday Agreement at risk and that workers, consumers, and environmental rights were going to be undermined.

"What we have before us is not a serious proposal to break the deadlock; instead these proposals are nothing more than a cynical attempt from the Prime Minister to shift the blame for his failure to deliver," said Corbyn.
