Ecuador: Interior minister promises to use full force of law if "vandalism" continues

Ecuador, Quito

Ecuadorian Interior Minister Maria Paula Romo commented on the recent riots sweeping the country during a press conference in Quito on Friday.

Romo said the government rejects any "violent attitudes" and that if repeated, the government will "act in application of the law and, in this case, of the state of emergency.

Images also show workers collecting debris left behind after riots between demonstrators and police the previous day.

Demonstrations along main roads were called by the transport sector, which rejects the current economic direction promoted by the government, including the ending of state fuel subsidies.

More than 200 people were reportedly detained in the protests, most of them in the coastal city of Guayaquil.
