Ecuador, Quito
October 05, 2019 at 01:04 GMT +00:00 · Published

Police fired tear gas at protesters, as the latter took to the streets of Quito on Friday, to denounce the elimination of fuel subsidies announced by the Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno.

Footage shows confrontations between police forces and demonstrators with at least 350 reportedly arrested.

Due to the nationwide protests, a state of emergency was declared on Thursday, which will be applied throughout the country for 60 days, allowing the Ecuadorian president to have the Armed Forces in the streets, as well as close ports, airports, and border crossings.

In agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to obtain millions of dollars in loans, the government of Ecuador introduced the series of economic adjustment measures including the elimination of fuel subsidies, which will increase gasoline prices by 25% to 75%, while diesel prices are expected to almost double. Public employees' salaries will also be reduced and taxes will be increased for some companies.
