Veteran Japanese rugby players happy to die on the pitch

Senior rugby players in their 70s and 80s continue to hit the pitch as part of a team located in the western part of Tokyo. They were seen warming up and playing a full game at the Fuwaku Rugby Club on Sunday.

The Fuwaku players performed a number of rugby drills and warm ups before the match kicked off. The players' strength and stamina was put to the test as they took part in competitive scrums as part of a full contact match.

Some of the players have been playing rugby for decades, and said they still live for the sport and the chance to socialise with their teammates over a post-match beer. A couple of the players even said they would be happy to die in their boots.

Ruichi Nagayama, an 86-year-old rugby player, described his motivations for still playing. "Rugby, team mates, that's it. I don't have any other hobby, I live for rugby, I think if I can die on the field, that would make me the happiest."

The elderly players, whose club only features players aged over 40, play in a red and white hooped shirt reminiscent of that worn by the men's national team, who are currently unbeaten in the ongoing Rugby World Cup.
