Hong Kong: Opposition movement hold vigil for 'dead' comrades

Hong Kong, Special Administrative Region of China, Hong Kong

Protesters in Hong Kong held a ceremony on Sunday to commemorate three protesters who they believe were killed during violent clashes with police on 31 August at Prince Edward Mass Transit railway (MTR) station.

The territory's police force have come under heavy scrutiny after reducing the number of injured people from ten to seven.

The MTR Corporation has refused to release possibly police-incriminating CCTV footage of what happened at the station, despite repeated demands from protesters and human rights groups. The Corporation released 21 stills of their choice in a press release, citing privacy issues as one of the reasons why they will not publish the full footage.

Demonstrators lit incense sticks and later marched through the streets. Other rallies took part in different parts of the peninsula, sparked by the government's new ban on face mask upheld by the High Court earlier in the day.

The Emergency Regulations Ordinance law used by Hong Kong's Chief Executive Carrie Lam to implement the ban was last applied during riots in 1967. Lam said during a press conference on Friday that the barring Hong Kongers from wearing face coverings at public rallies will provide a "deterrent effect" and is intended to stop violent acts occurring during protests.

The protests are also reportedly fuelled by the police's use of live bullets against demonstrators.
