UK: Protesters rally in Edinburgh as Brexit extension request rejected by court

United Kingdom, Edinburgh

Activists rallied outside the Court of Session in Edinburgh on Monday, as it rejected a request to force UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson to seek the extension of Brexit if he is unable to get a deal through Parliament.

"The court has dismissed our petition. The court has said that it has promises from the government that the government will send the letter mandated by Parliament and will act in a way as not to frustrate Parliament's intention in enacting the so-called Benn Act," said one of the anti-Brexit campaigners Jolyon Maugham, who brought the request to the court alongside green energy entrepreneur Dale Vince and Member of the Scottish National Party (SNP) Joanna Cherry.

Maugham expressed hope that 'the court is right, and that the government will, as the government has promised to do, abide by the law.' However, he noted that they would appeal against the court's decision, noting that 'there is very real doubt in my mind that the government will act in accordance with the law.'

One protester, who attended the rally outside the court, said that the ruling 'is adding to the uncertainty while another said that it seemed 'extraordinary we are in a position where we have to go to court to try and force the government to not break the law. But that seems to be where we are.'
