Hong Kong: Public transport paralysed after weekend unrest

Hong Kong, Special Administrative Region of China, Hong Kong
October 08, 2019 at 12:10 GMT +00:00 · Published

Mongkok MTR station was one of many stations bearing the scars of last weekend's unrest in Hong Kong on Tuesday.

Several stations were vandalised, which led to the partial closure of the train network. Mongkok was daubed with graffiti containing anti-governmental slogans, lights and ticket machines were broken and ceiling was leaking.

The city's Mass Transit Railway (MTR) system has been the target of repeated vandalism for its apparent pro-government stance among management and trade unions.

At least 77 rioters were arrested over the weekend for violating the government's new face mask ban. More than 200 cases of vandalism were reported, with roads and the MTR network having suffered the greatest damage.
