Japan: NBA commissioner defends HK tweet as 'freedom of expression'

Japan, Tokyo
October 08, 2019 at 13:57 GMT +00:00 · Published

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver addressed the media in Tokyo on Tuesday defending Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey's tweet supporting the anti-government protests in Hong Kong, amid a backlash from China.

"The long held values of the NBA are to support freedom of expression and certainly freedom of expression by members of the NBA community and in this case Daryl Morey as the general manager of the Houston Rockets enjoys that right as one of our employees," Silver said.

He added that he will travel to Shanghai for the Lakers-Nets game on Thursday and hopes to, "meet with the appropriate officials and discuss where we stand and again put those remarks from Daryl Morey and my remarks in an appropriate context of a many decades long relationship."

While Morey apologised for his now-deleted tweet in support of Hong Kong's "fight for freedom," Chinese companies and networks including state-run television network CCTV, streaming service Tencent and online shopping giant Alibaba suspended NBA broadcasts and product listings on Tuesday, after Silver first voiced his support for the Houston Rockets general manager.
