A Hong Kong police spokesperson said that violence at anti-government demonstrations reached 'a critical level' at a news conference in the city on Tuesday.

"We are alarmed by a number of cases where rioters viciously beat up people with different views to theirs in districts like Mongkok and Sham Shui Po, leaving them unconscious with life-threatening injuries. Please do not underestimate the gravity of this development," said Kwok Yam-yung, Regional Commander of New Territories North.

Officials defended the use of force by police showing various objects which as they say were used as weapons by anti-government protesters.

"Whenever our officers encounter the threat of serious bodily harm or bodily injuries or even life threatening attack, we are justified to use our firearm," said Kong Wing-cheung, Acting Chief Superintendent of Police Public Relations Branch.

Another spokesperson, Ng Cheuk-hang, said that police were assessing the ban on wearing masks that was enacted a few days ago.

Anti-government demonstrations across Hong Kong entered their 18th week.
