France: Farmers hit by ban on agricultural products after Rouen blaze

France, Rouen
October 08, 2019 at 16:54 GMT +00:00 · Published

Farmers in the Rouen area expressed their concerns about the impact of local authorities' decision to ban the sale of crops or animal products, following the huge blaze at Lubizol chemical plant on September 26, as footage filmed on Monday in Rouen shows.

Farmer Pascal Henace, who manages an organic farming business in Sommery, said the move already caused an 80 per cent loss of income in just two weeks, and hopes the state will step in and provide financial compensation.

Goat cheese producer Stephanie Decayeux is storing her foodstuffs as she waits the ban to be lifted, but worries that her customers will no longer trust in the safety of her product.

Dairy farmer Francis Beaufils claimed he's lost between 1,000 and 1,800 litres of milk daily since the incident. "We are demanding that all losses related to the Lubrizol blaze be covered by the state or their insurance, but that it be covered", he said.

The fire at a lubricant factory owned by Lubrizol began on September 26, sending thick plumes of smoke over the city and forcing authorities to close schools and advise residents to stay inside. The order banning the sale and harvest of agriculture products applies to 112 districts in the area so far.
