Ecuador: Indigenous protesters rally against Moreno’s economic package

Ecuador, Quito
October 08, 2019 at 21:24 GMT +00:00 · Published

Thousands of protesters, including indigenous citizens of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE), took the streets of Quito on Tuesday to rally against the economic package of President Lenin Moreno’s government, also known as ‘paquetazo’.

Footage show protesters with flags and banners marching through the streets of Quito, and tires being burned in a road.

"We've all taken to the streets to reject the neoliberal policies of the Moreno government. He has not acted frankly. This government no longer represents the Ecuadorian people," said a demonstrator explaining the reasons for the protest.

Hours earlier, Moreno announced that his government would move from the capital Quito to Guayaquil due to mass demonstrations, which he blamed on ex-president Rafael Correa and his Venezuelan ally Nicolas Maduro during a speech from Guayaquil on Monday.

Ecuador has experience five days of violent unrest over economic measures introduced by President Lenin Moreno. Principally, it proposes the elimination of the fuel subsidies, which have been in place since the 1970s.
