China: Basketball fans react to NBA HK tweet controversy

Chinese basketball fans reacted to controversy surrounding the cancellation of NBA broadcasts in China, as they gathered outside the Ritz-Carlton in Shanghai on Tuesday, hoping to see players ahead of Wednesday's Lakers-Nets game.

"As a fan, we are definitely not happy. But they have questioned the integrity of our country. Adam Silver didn't even apologise. We can only say goodbye to the NBA if there is no apology," said Li. "We will watch the CBA in the future."

"The NBA is a place where everyone loves basketball. It should not be mixed with politics," said Zhang, who came to protest, saying he isn't a Lakers or Nets fan.

The controversy started when Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey tweeted over the weekend in support of Hong Kong protesters' "fight for freedom." Though he later apologised, NBA commissioner Adam Silver defended Morey's "ability to exercise his freedom of expression" on Tuesday, prompting Chinese companies and networks including state-run television network CCTV, streaming service Tencent and online shopping giant Alibaba suspended NBA broadcasts and product listings on Tuesday.
