Iran: Rouhani urges Turkey to show restraint in northern Syria

Iran, Islamic Republic of, Tehran

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called on Turkey to "act with more patience and restraint" in northern Syria, while speaking at a meeting with his cabinet in Tehran on Wednesday.

"We are calling on our friend and our brother country, Turkey, and its government to act with more patience and restraint, and to revise its decision and chosen path," Rouhani said in reaction to Turkey's decision to launch an offensive into northern Syria.

"Turkey has concerns about its southern borders, and it is their right that these concerns be alleviated, but the right path should be chosen," Rouhani said. "The solution for security in the northern borders of Syria and southern borders of Turkey is possible with the presence of Syria's army."

'We don't think this way is effective, useful or good for the region, for Syria and for Turkey," Rouhani said about Ankara's decision.

Earlier on Wednesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the beginning of the operation to create a 'safe zone' cleared of US-backed Kurdish militias, which Ankara labels 'terrorists'.
