Germany: 'Protection is missing' - Jewish community head on Halle attack

Germany, Halle
October 10, 2019 at 09:00 GMT +00:00 · Published

Residents in the eastern German city of Halle mourned the victims of the recent shooting near the synagogue, which took the lives of two people and left several injured, as shown in the video filmed in Halle on Thursday.

"Like this woman [that was killed], her three children will stay without their mother, they have a shock for their lifetime, they have to deal with this now," Halle resident Sylvia said. She continued: "If you still show yourself in public, if you participate in events and so on, you show that you are not scared and that those [people] have no power.''

Max Privorozki, Head of the Jewish community in Halle, who witnessed the attack, said the police protection "is missing." He added: "When I called [police] from the synagogue saying that there is an armed terror attack against the synagogue and I screamed that there are 80-100 people, I didn't count, I didn't know exactly, but I was in a panic. And then they asked me first for my name and where the synagogue is. For me, the questions were really dumb at this moment.''

Earlier on Wednesday, two people were killed after a man opened fire near a synagogue where the Jewish community was observing the holiday of Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. According to reports, one woman was shot dead outside the synagogue near a Jewish cemetery and one man killed in a nearby kebab shop.

A 27-year-old male named Stephan B. has been arrested, according to a spokesman for the German Federal Prosecutor. The attack appears to have been motivated by "extreme far-right and anti-Semitic" views, according to German reports. The suspect live-streamed the attack on Twitch, an online video-game platform, before being arrested.
