An incoming typhoon has forced tournament organisers to call off two Rugby World Cup pool stage matches, World Rugby COO and Head of Rugby World Cup Alan Gilpin announced in Tokyo on Thursday.

England v France and New Zealand v Italy are the two matches to be cancelled while the third Saturday match - Ireland v Samoa - will go ahead as planned.

"Based on this morning's information from our independent weather experts, Hagibis is predicted to be the biggest typhoon of the 2019 season and is highly likely to cause considerable disruption in the Tokyo, Yokohama and city of Toyota areas throughout Saturday," said Gilpin.

"We've taken the very difficult but we think right decision to cancel certain matches in the affected areas," he stated.

According to tournament rules, pool matches that do not go ahead as scheduled are cancelled and two points are awarded to each team by default.

"As you can imagine, the decision to cancel these matches has not been taken lightly," Gilpin stated.
