Russia: Aunt of murdered 9yo girl against death penalty for suspected killer *EXCLUSIVE*

Russian Federation, Saratov
October 12, 2019 at 13:23 GMT +00:00 · Published

Aunt of a murdered nine-year-old girl, Irina Kulyasova, commented on the calls for a death penalty for the girl’s suspected murderer, speaking in Saratov on Saturday.

Kulyasova said that the family does not want this case to become ‘a precedent’ for the death penalty in Russia, where this kind of punishment remains abolished. “Some say: ‘a life for a child’s life’. We would not support this,” she said.

Speaking about the suspected murderer, Kulyasova said she had never met neither him nor anyone from his family before.

Speaking of the condition of the girl’s mother, Kulyasova said that she “is hanging in there as much as she can”. The girl’s aunt went on saying that she believes the family should leave the city. “It is very difficult to walk all the time near the place where your child was killed,” she added.

The girl went missing on October 9, on her way to school. Her body was found the next day not far from local garages.

After hearing about the murder, Saratov locals organised a rally, calling for an extrajudicial punishment for the 35-year-old suspect.

On October 12 the Russian Investigative Committee released the footage showing the arrested suspect.
