Hong Kong: Protesters rally in support of Houston Rockets GM amid NBA HK scandal

Hong Kong, Special Administrative Region of China, Hong Kong
October 15, 2019 at 18:10 GMT +00:00 · Published

Protesters gathered on a Hong Kong basketball court to show their support for Houston Rockets' General Manager Daryl Morey's now-deleted tweet supporting the anti-government protests in their city, on Tuesday.

Demonstrators can be seen wearing masks as they sang the unofficial anthem of the protest movement, 'Glory to Hong Kong,' and holding anti-Beijing signs, before shooting a few balls into the basket, which had pictures of Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam and NBA superstar LeBron James on the backboard.

One demonstrator gave a speech, saying that "We do not want China to take over in here, we are Chinese, we belong to China, we understand, is like we do not refuse to take orders, but we do not want people beating us."

"We are not scared of the China government, we do not, we do not want you guys to misunderstand what we are doing, we do not need the money from China, we are not you, LeBron" he added, presumably in reference to James's recent comments criticising Morey for "not being educated about the situation."

While Morey has deleted his October 4 tweet, Chinese companies and networks including state-run television network CCTV, streaming service Tencent and online shopping giant Alibaba suspended NBA broadcasts and product listings, after NBA Commissioner Adam Silver initially voiced his support for the Houston Rockets general manager.
